Hazelnuts in Your Yard & Garden
When hazelnuts come to our Salem roasting facility and the shells are cracked open to extract the hazelnut kernels for our healthy, roasted Hazelnut Delights™, we don't let those shells go to waste. We take the empty hazelnut shells, crack them again, and package them in durable 30-pound bags that are distributed to nurseries and garden supply stores throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Twice-Cracked Hazelnut Shells are a versatile material ideally suited for garden pathways, larger landscaped areas, and potted plants. Each bag provides a coverage rate of sixteen square feet for a one-inch layer or eight square feet for a two-inch layer.
Our Twice-Cracked Hazelnut Shells are an excellent alternative to bark mulch. Hazelnut shells are less messy than mulch and also decompose at a slower rate. In the garden, an adequate layer of hazelnut shells can block the germination of weeds, particularly tenacious liverwort. As a pathway material, hazelnut shells are a better option than rock material because they are less expensive and easier to transport.
